Entirely restored, the Atomium reopened its doors to the public in 2006.

The strange edifice is, along with Manneken Pis, Brussel's symbol. Conceived and built for the 1958 World Fair, it represents the elemental scheme of iron crystal enlarged by 165 billion times. You may also notice in the 9 spheres a reference to the 9 Belgian provinces that were at the time. Since the Brabant's split, there have been 10 provinces.
