An immense park to the west of Paris known as "the lungs of Paris", the Bois de Boulogne is the Parisians' favourite area for walks. The park covers 846 hectares, intersected by 95 kms of roads and paths situated around two lakes, three rivers and a racecourse, running the length of the capital's old fortifications. Of the beautiful residences which sprang up around its perimeter in the 18th Century, only the Bagatelle Pavilion remains. The park's name commemorates the pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Boulogne. In places, the forest of 400,000 trees is embellished by flowerbeds. The woods are well-liked by Parisians: walkers, joggers and picnickers meet up in family groups or friendly gatherings. Things to see: The Bagatelle Gardens and rose garden The Jardin d'Acclimatation for children The lower lake The Longchamp and Auteuil racecourses Things to do: Take a boat trip on the main lake (paying) Go for a bike ride in the woods (bike rental available north of the main lake) Visit the Bagatelle rose garden Have fun in the Jardin d'Acclimatation Go jogging in the woods Have a picnic on the wood's large grass areas Go and see horse races at the Longchamp and Auteuil racecourses Have fun at the fair called Fete à Neuneu which takes place at certain times of the year Nearby: The Auteuil Greenhouses The Roland Garros tennis courts |
