Located in line with the Eiffel Tower, the Champ de Mars provides a marvellous view of the Parisian monument. It is a park open to the public, accessible both day and night, which is designed around vast lawns. The 24.5 hectares which link the Eiffel Tower to the Ecole Militaire (Military Academy), comprise one of the largest green areas in Paris. It was here that the army carried out its manoeuvres and parades, hence its name the Champ de Mars (Field of Mars, Roman god of war). It subsequently was the location of the Universal Exhibitions. On the 14th of July, 1790, the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was celebrated here.
