The chateau of Chantilly's inestimable collection makes it the second most important art museum after the Louvre. Between 1386 and 1897, three families shared the property of the lands of Chantilly: Orgemont, Montmorency and Bourbon-Condé. In 1886, the Duke of Aumale, only heir to the Prince of Condé, handed it down to the Institut de France in order to present and look after the rich collections of books, etchings, drawings, paintings as well as the edifice itself. The Great Stables, a "lively" museum of horse, are, with the park and the chateau, the Chantilly estate. Built upon the site of an ancient medieval castle by Pierre de Chambiges for Anne de Montmorency in 1528, the Petit Château was only refurbished in 1654 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the Grand Condé who accomodated renowned guests such as Bossuet, Boileau, Fénelon and Racine. The Great Stables and the porcelain factory were created in the XVIIIth century just before the construction of the park: Jeu de Paume, Hameau and Pavillon de Vénus were added too. After the fall of the Empire, it was given back to the Condés but in a state of decay because of the French Revolution. The Duke of Aumale inherited in 1830, went away into exile in England where he gathered a fabulous collection of objects and works of art and then came back home to restore the buildings and hand it down to make it a museum. During the visit, you can admire tapestries made by the Gobelins factory and paintings by Descamps, Fromentin, Gros, Vernet and of course Raphaël, Poussin and many others. |
