On the site of the medieval fortress of the Louvre, the Cour Carrée was completed in the 17th Century, during the reign of Louis XIII, by the architect Le Mercier. The courtyard's style is an example of the new characteristically French architecture: classicism. Superbly laid out, it provides a peaceful spot right in the middle of Parisian hustle and bustle. Because of its splendid lighting, the Cour Carrée has become a magical place from nightfall.
