Set in the triangle formed by the Hôtel de Ville (town hall), Place de la Bastille and Place de la République, the Marais quarter is the heart of historic Paris. From the 13th Century, monks started to cultivate the marshes which used to be there. In the 15th Century, the King established a residence here, the Hôtel Saint-Paul. In particular, it was the construction of Place Royale (now Place des Vosges) at the beginning of the 17th Century which made the district flourish. In the 17th and 18th Century, the finest of mansions were built there: the Hôtel de Sully, Hôtel Carnavalet, Hôtel de Soubise and the Hôtel de Rohan to name the most notable. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the Jewish quarter established around Rue des Rosiers began to see the arrival of many people from Central Europe who added to the fabric of a society made up of craftsmen in the clothes business. Nowadays, it is the gay community who have settled in the Marais.
You simply must ramble down the little narrow streets lined with old mansions in order to appreciate this historic quarter in its entirety. The Marais has always been and remains a place of entertainment and a favourite spot for walks: in addition, the shops are open on Sundays.
