With the Louvre colonnade on the south side and the Eglise Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois on the north side, these are the two edifices which flank this famous square. The Claude Perrault colonnade (brother of the well-known writer of fairy tales) was originally the main entrance of the Château of King Louis XIV, before he undertook the conversion of the Château de Versailles. The church, which became that of the Kings of France, during the building of the palace opposite, was the fruit of the labours of several eras, regularly extended and rebuilt.
