A grandiose palace created in the middle of marshland by Louis XIV, the Château of Versailles was the Sun-King's stage and political instrument. Symbolically, it was the King's chamber which was at the heart of the château. As a royal residence and political capital of the kingdom, Versailles was the epicentre during an illustrious period in the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette. When visiting the château, you can wonder at the superb royal suites in their original condition, the spectacular Hall of Mirrors, the splendid chapel, the sumptuous opera house all in wood, and also the private apartments which are equally interesting. In 1837, on the orders of King Louis-Philippe, the Musée de l'Histoire de France (Museum of the History of France) was founded there dedicated to "all of the glories of France" mindful of encouraging national reconciliation. These numerous halls are situated in the wings of the château. The Galerie des Batailles (Gallery of Battles) and the Salle des Croisades (Hall of the Crusades) comprise the most remarkable of places. The gardens created by the landscape gardener Le Nôtre are notable for their copses - sheltered areas giving privacy - which have been recently restored. The Trianon estate preserves the memory of royalty, in particular that of Marie-Antoinette at the Petit Trianon and at the hamlet where she played at leading a rural life.
