The nerve centre of the Rive Gauche, one often meets under the statue of Danton. The site used to be that of the hôtel de Condé. The road and the square were founded in 1779. The road was a great success due to the large number of shops which were established there, and above all because it was the first road with pavements ! When it was built, the square was called Place du Théâtre Français, then Place de la Comédie Française. Indeed, in 1782, in place of the hôtel de Condé, a theatre was built at the King's wishes to allow actors to give performances in a venue worthy of their art. In 1797, the theatre became the Théâtre de l'Odéon. On the square, between 1779 and 1956, number 1 was occupied by the Café Voltaire where numerous writers used to meet. Delacroix, Musset, Vallès, Verlaine, Mallarmé, Rodin, Gide, Valéry and many others were accustomed to going there. Camille Desmoulins lived at number 2.
