Palais des Doges

|
Built upon Xth century fortifications, the Palace of the Doges was rebuilt in 1172 by the doge Sebastiano Ziani who also refurbished the Saint Mark's square. The Palace of the Doges is a real gothic masterpiece. It was built upon ancient foundations but has definitely Renaisssance features. Enlarged in the XIIIth century, gothic became really part of the architectural structure of the palace. Restored and embellished by the 120 doges that lived in the palace, it was decorated by the great artist Pietro Lombardo. Along with the doge's residence, the palace fulfiled other functions such as the government headquarters, tribunals, archiving and even prison. The famous palace opened to the public in 1923. Things to see: the halls magnificiently decorated by Tintoretto, Titian, Tiepolo, etc., the beautiful outer court, weapon collections, prisons linked to the palace by the Bridge of Sighs? |
