This palace commissioned by Marie de Médicis, put up in a Florentine style by Salomon de Brosse between 1615 and 1625, topped with a gilt dome, the "Luco" has seen a number of uses: palace, weapons' factory, prison, seat of government under the Directoire, seat of the Senate since 1958. Despite the fact that the interior has largely been revamped since its construction, particularly by Chalgrin, its salons, galleries, stairways and library are nevertheless sumptuously decorated, with major works by Delacroix, Jordaens and Maurice Denis. The "Galerie de Marie de Médicis" who had it decorated by Rubens, is now to be seen at the Louvre.
The Palace's Orangery houses the Musée du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Museum), a place of temporary exhibitions. The "Petit Luxembourg" next to it, is the ancient mansion, purchased by Marie in 1612. It is the present-day residence of the President of the Senate.
