This beautiful square is opposite the Palais-Royal building, which was built by Richelieu and where Louis XIV grew up. In the 18th Century, it was the Parisian residence of a branch of the royal family, the Orléans, who had it made into a sumptuous, lavishly decorated palace. Today, it houses several state institutions, one of which is the Ministère de la Culture (Ministry of Culture). From the square, one can glimpse the Cour de l'Horloge (Clock Courtyard).
On the corner of Rue de Valois and Rue Saint-Honoré, there used to be the theatre of the "Petit Cardinal" (Little Cardinal) where Molière, playing Arguan in the Malade Imaginaire, died suddenly on the 17th of February, 1673. The armchair in which Molière was acting on stage can be seen today at the Comédie-Française, a few metres from here.
