Opposite the Grevin Museum and opening out onto the boulevard Montmartre, le Passage des Panoramas is truly the first roofed passageway in Paris, opened in 1799 and described in Nana by Zola. It is also one of the few passages to have kept the liveliness which characterised it at the time of its construction in the 19th Century, and this, because of its advantageous location in the midst of the Grands Boulevards. Built on the former garden of the Hôtel de Montmorency, its name came from a new attraction imported from London: the panorama. Six arcades make up the panoramas: the passage itself plus the Galerie des Variétés (with its theatre), the Galerie de Saint Marc, the Galeries Montmartre, Feydau and de la Bourse. At number 17, you will see the artists' entrance to the Théâtre des Variétés; at number 47, the boutique of the engraver Stern, which has been in existence since 1940 with its period woodwork and antique furniture; at number 57, the Arbre à Cannelle, a salon de thé (tea room) where you can admire the classic Napoleon III decor.
