The Parc des Princes is the venue for many sports events and notably has hosted the Olympic Games twice and the World Cup (football). In 1841, King Louis-Philippe had an enclosure built comprising a park frequented mostly by the Parisian aristocracy. Undoubtedly, it is this which gave the present-day name of Parc des Princes. In 1897, it accommodated a velodrome (bicycle stadium) and in 1903 saw the finish of the first Tour de France. In 1972, it was replaced by a new sports park built by Roger Taillibert, whose stadium can hold almost 50,000 people. The home football club is Paris-Saint-Germain.
