The Georges Brassens Park was created on the site occupied by the Vaugirard abattoirs from 1895 to 1974, of which several architectural features remain such as the entrance lodges, the belfry which used to stand in the centre of the auction and horse market: the two bulls sculpted by Auguste Cain in 1878 are also a reminder of what went on in bygone days. Completed in 1983, the park covers 7.7 hectares and owes its name quite simply to the poet author-composer and performer Georges Brassens (1921-1981), who lived for a very long time not far from here, at number 42, Rue Santos-Dumont. It was in this park that the first Jardin de Senteurs (Garden of Fragrances) of Ile-de-France was created: a maze of paths enable one to walk amongst 80 species of scented plant (honeysuckle, jasmin, wysteria, etc.), aromatic and medicinal plants (camomile, vervain, etc.) which extend over 1,300 metres. Thanks to ticketing in Braille, blind people can be introduced to botany. The rosary contains 25 varieties of rose. Finally, the black Pinot vineyard, Clos des Morillons [Morillon Domain] which has more than 1,000 m2, 700 vines, and produces more than 300 bottles per year, and the educational beehive of the Association Française d'Apiculture (French Apiculture Association) attract most of the visitors to the park.
