Piazza San Marco

|
The only square in Venice, hence called piazza and not campo, was before smaller and a canal, filled up since then, cut through the place. You can admire the Palace of the Dukes and the basilica Ala Napoleonica, premises of the Correr museum, and the columns brought from Acre on which was placed the winged lion of Saint-Mark. He has been the patron saint of Venice since 828 when the two navigators Buono da Malamocco and Rustico da Torcello brought the remains of the Evangelist which was in Alexandria then belonging to the Moors. On a column is the statue of Saint-Theodore, first patron saint of Venice, together with dog-headed dragon made in the XVth century. |
