Nerve centre of Paris nightlife, not to missed, Place Pigalle is at the heart of the "red light district" of the capital. Like the arrondissement, Rue Pigalle, from the name of Mme Pompadour's favourite sculptor, who lived at number 17, has seen some famous inhabitants: Victor Hugo, Bonnard, Vuillard, George Sand, Chopin. It was also in this road at number 67, that the Hôtel de la Poste aux Chevaux, was located, a place where one could hire, as long as one was well-off, horse-drawn carriages in which to travel. The square dates from 1827 and was equally a place of residence for many artists and painters. There used to be the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes, where Lautrec, Zola, Maupassant, Verlaine and many Impressionist painters used to frequent. In the 19th Century, it was the centre of a writers and artists quarter. Number 11: Puvis de Chavannes, Boldini and Isabey had studios there Number 9: formerly, the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes Number 23: Boulevard de Clichy: brasserie " Le Pigalle" characteristic of Parisian cafés in the 50s. Today, Place Pigalle has become a top Parisian tourist spot, but there are more night-time attractions than historic monuments... Things to see: The quarter's entertainment by night Things to do: Go into one of the private clubs (sexy!) in the quarter Go to see one of the theatre performances in the quarter's numerous establishments (enquire for details) Nearby: The Moulin Rouge and its famous revue Place Blanche Rue and Place des Abbesses The Cimetière de Montmartre (Montmartre Cemetery) The Musée de l'Erotisme (Museum of Eroticism) |
