Pont Neuf

|
Do not judge by appearances ! Pont Neuf (New Bridge) is in fact the oldest bridge in Paris, inaugurated by Henri IV in 1607. Its freestone arches of perfect stereotomy (masonry) and its pedestrian refuges from passing horses and carts make it an exceptional place, modern for its time, in an era when bridges were lined with wooden houses. In the centre, the statue of "Henri IV" nicknamed the "Vert Galant" (a chivalrous, debonair fellow with an eye for the ladies) pays tribute to the bridge's patron. From the square above, at the tip of the Ile de la Cité (island), is a beautiful view of the bridge's structure and the quays.
