Pont Notre Dame

|
It was in the 15th Century that the decision was taken to replace the wooden footbridge which existed here with a real bridge. All the bridges which were built were destroyed and one had to wait until Fra Giocondo da Verona in 1500 for a stone bridge to be built. It was surmounted by 68 identical houses in brick and stone which were numbered. Because of the elegance of its houses, Notre-Dame bridge would remain the most fashionable bridge in Paris, always busy, often the venue for royal processions and triumphant arrivals. The present-day construction dates from 1912, and is comprised of a metallic arch. Nearby: Place du Châtelet and its theatres Ile de la Cité, the Conciergerie and Sainte Chapelle |
