The Ponte Vecchio, to visit absolutely, is one of the most emblematic monuments of Florence. Located between the Lungarno Acciacioli and the Via Guicciardini, the bridge is said to have existed since the Roman era. Documents from the Xth century testifying its existence were found. The first "solid" bridge was built around 1117. It was made of a stone structure that replaced the ancient wooden bridge. Destroyed by a flood in 1333, the bridge was built again in 1345 by Neri di Fioravante according to some people or by Taddeo Gaddi according to Vasari. The very solid triple arch structure adopted a more civil, hence less defensive, because of the construction of workshops on its sides. In 1565, the Corridoio Vasariano was ericted above the Ponte Vecchio and consists in a covered corridor with arches that links the Palazzo Vecchio and the Gli Uffizi to the Pitti palace. The bridge had had its present appearance since the VXIIth century after the constructions of back shops. Today, the Ponte Vecchio houses goldsmiths and jewellers in the small shops occupied by butchers until the XVth century.

To see: the bridge, the view upon the Arno, the magnificient chromatic effects; To do: visit the little jewellers' shops, the Corridoio Vasariano; Close to: Galleria degli Uffizi, Piazza della Signoria.
