Le Quai aux Fleurs, which is remarkably peaceful, gives you an idea of what the Ile de la Cité looked like before the demolitions of the 19th Century. Number 11, as is indicated by a plaque above the door, was the residence of the famous lovers Héloïse and Abélard, rebuilt in 1849. In 1100, Abélard came from Nantes to Paris to pursue his studies. In 1118, Canon Fulbert asked him to tutor his niece Héloïse, 18 years old and 21 years his junior. The pair fell madly in love and a son was born to them and they were married secretly. Fulbert, in revenge and to stop the affair, had Abélard castrated. He became a monk, founded the Hermitage of Paraclet, and Héloïse took the nun's veil at Argenteuil. On the death of her lover in 1142, she secretly had his coffin brought to her cloister at Paraclet, where she had moved, and was united with him 22 years later. Today, the two lovers are still together at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
