The Royal Palace of Queluz's construction was ordered by Pedro III, not king of Portugal at the time. Built in 1747, it is still considered a jewel of Portuguese heritage. The abundance of its decoration, the works of renowned architects and its somptuous garden à la française makes it the Portuguese Versailles. The baroque style castle's plans were conceived by Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Manuel Caetano de Sousa who did not forget to include azulejos, pride of the Portuguese craftsmanship. Today, the Queluz palace still amazes the visitors who came to admire the last monument building of the Portuguese royal family.
