Rialto bridge Venice

|
Located in the heart of Venice, the Rialto bridge was originally made of wood. In 1310, it was destroyed because of a riot and in 1444, it was destroyed again under the weight of marquis Ferrare's nuptial cortege. Before there was also a drawbridge. Then, in 1524, was organized a contest for the definitive making of a bridge but the city greatly in debt could not choose Michelangelo nor Sansovino nor Pallodio since they passed away before the construction. The current bridge, the arch of which can let a galley in, was inaugurated in 1592. The cost of the construction was so high that there was a tollgate. |
