This is the heart of the old Jewish quarter of Paris. Dating back to the 13th Century, it is the main testament to the Jewish history of the Marais quarter. Furthermore, several signs are written in Hebrew. The climbing roses which cover the Philippe-Auguste ramparts, gave the road its name. There used to be a synagogue, destroyed in 1394 when all signs of Jewry were removed from the area. This banishment endured until the Revolution. Today, it is a place mainly of fashion boutiques, bookshops and restaurants. Note: the shops close on Saturdays.
