Near Paris, the Château de Saint-Cloud and its park, created from 1658 by the Duke of Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, played an important role in French history in the 19th Century, Louis XVI acquired it in 1785 as a gift for Marie-Antoinette. Napoleon Bonaparte carried out his Coup d'?at of the 18 brumaire year VIII (Republican calendar), or the 9th of November, and it became his favourite residence. Napoleon III was proclaimed Emperor here on the 1st of December 1852. The château was burnt down by the Prussians on the 13th of October, 1870. The French-style gardens designed by Le Nôtre, have been preserved.
