This is the central point of the Montmartre hill. In the early morning, the square still has a village feel. Before having been invaded by tourists and painters, Place du Tertre was the location for the gallows of the Montmartre abbey in the Middle Ages. Around the 1850s, a tree of liberty was planted there. During redevelopment of Montmartre, it became the main square in the village. The great influx of tourists that it experiences today, means the area has somewhat lost its charm. Despite the bustle, do not forget to take a look at the pretty houses around the square. Number 3: the first house in Montmartre built in 1790. Number 6: Mère (Mother) Catherine's house, founded in 1793.
