Between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, amid the Parisian hustle and bustle, the Jardin des Tuileries makes for a favourite stop for the tourist. This is the garden of the Palais des Tuileries, which was commissioned by Queen Catherine de Médicis in the 16th Century and burnt down during the Commune in 1871. André Le Nôtre resumed designing the gardens in 1664 and devised the superb perspective of the central walkway, which is in line with the main "historic" thoroughfare of Paris, and transports the walker into the Grand Siècle (Great Century). Its 28 hectares provide Parisians with a peaceful haven to come and eat at the pavilions on summer evenings. Chestnut, elm and lime trees shade flower beds, pools, fountains and outstanding statues from all periods. The oldest sculptures are on the Place de la Concorde side. The terraces known as "du bord de l'eau" (on the water's edge), "jeu de paume" (real tennis), "Feuillants" (monks of the Cistercian order) and "du Carrousel" (Carousel) provide fine viewpoints over the gardens and the quays. The whole arrangement is a masterpiece of classic garden design.
